I wonder why the birds make nests in trees instead of the ground

Nests are built in trees for safety. Being up in the trees keeps the parent birds, eggs, and hatchlings from being eaten by predators and from being stepped on.

There is, however a bird called the killdeer that does make its nest on the ground.
